Promoting Leadership: Engaging Communities and Changing Governance across London

 

Our BME Training Leadership & Engagement Programme is a pan London service funded by London Councils.

 

The Primary aims of this programme is to provide individual and organisational skills development, training and capacity building support to BME community and third sector organisations across all London Boroughs. Its work focuses on Promoting Leadership, Engaging & Connecting Communities with Governance across London through:

• Increasing BME engagement and participation in elected & appointed governance, service planning & policy development

• Promoting leadership within diverse BME, Migrant & Refugee communities

•Connecting marginalised communities, improving civic engagement and fostering community cohesion

• Breaking barriers, improving opportunities & community capacity to engage with existing elected and appointed bodies & structures

• Supporting third sector, second tier and strategic govt. & non govt. bodies, partnerships, structures & bodies to become responsive & accountable to local communities
• access to bespoke training & capacity building programme

a series of participative seminars and consultative events on Representation, Responsiveness & Accountability to connect mainstream strategic agencies, partnerships, networks etc with underrepresented & marginalised communities; briefings & collaborations with third sector & public bodies to promote opportunities in governance

facilitation of a pan London BME Network to improve networking between BME community & third sector reps & connectivity between them & mainstream bodies, governance arrangements & policy.

Breaking Barriers: Women4Change Gender Equality Programme

 

Service produces & disseminates regular Briefing Papers to third sector organisations on Government consultation papers. Our recent briefings papres focused on:

Breaking Barriers & Supporting marginalised communities

Women4Change programme (see more details below) to address barriers facing women in engaging in governance within BME communities & in mainstream elected & appointed bodies, activity to promote engagement & representation of marginalised sections e.g. older people, people with disabilities, migrant communities within existing networks & bodies.


Community Leadership & Mentoring programme

recruiting mentors, mentoring & supporting individuals to engage in leadership roles or governance mechanisms


Individual & Organisational Skills Development

supporting individuals & third sector organisations to secure representation, build collaborations, improve capacity etc & make effective interventions within local and regional govt. & non govt. bodies & structure


Harnessing ICT: engaging in e-governance, e-lobbying

enabling individuals & community groups to use ICT to engage in e-governance, e-consultations, lobbying & connectivity with elected councillors, MPs, local authorities etc.

Women4Change programme


Our Women4Change programme organises regular seminars throughout different London boroughs and aims to:


•provide perspectives & presentations on the under-representation of women from Black Minority Ethnic, Refugee & Migrant (BME) communities within elected & appointed positions, decision –making structures & in local regional & national public life including political & civic roles, governance and leadership positions


• examine the barriers that still exist to BME women’s engagement & participation within diverse BME communities, community leadership & community organisations as well as within mainstream public independent & political institutions, civic roles and leadership positions.



Women4Change Seminars: Action-orientated and outcome based seminars

Our seminars contribute towards building an action orientated programme, informed and led by women, to empower women & agencies working with or supporting BME women, to coordinate support to women & develop effective interventions & strategies to promote women into leadership roles.


Our Seminars focus on:


•developing a critical understanding of the dynamics of race & gender inequalities facing BME women


• advancing the establishment of an effective Support & Training Network to empower BME women


• Identifying women from diverse BME communities, who wish to participate in or are interested in engaging in any type of informal or formal governance or leadership role, supporting individual women or women’s groups, influencing or promoting existing gender equality strategies or services etc with a view to connecting them or matching them with appropriate opportunities in community or mainstream organisations, political or civic positions etc


• explore potential for diverse BME groups & providers to come together within partnerships and consortiums & bid for grants and contracts around addressing health inequalities and meeting health & social care needs of BME communities


• improve engagement between NHS, commissioners, allied health professionals, third sector and BME communities
